This chase really put much perspective into the “Tango” aspect of “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot”, did it not?
The sexiest chase I’ve ever seen, the best part is Fitz probably didn’t even know what to say or do once he caught up with Olivia.
The best part is that snatch & grab in under under like 10 seconds. I believe I counted once & from grab to closet door close was like 7 seconds.
My interpretation of this scene has always been that he had no plan, per se, once he followed her out of the room. It was a visceral, purely primal response to her leaving…she left and all the oxygen left the room immediately. In order to breathe again, he had to get to the oxygen source, which was Olivia. And so he was moving out of the room and down the hall before I think his brain was fully engaged in his actions. But once he was aware that she was speeding down that hall and doing her best to try to get away before he could catch her, he was on her and snatching her into the nearest secluded spot in 6 steps or less. I do believe he grabbed her and they were both in that closet within 7 seconds. I think once he was in the closet with her, the first emotions that rose to the surface were hunger and need, which drove him to kiss her.
Please. Don’t do this to me. Don’t make me go back & watch this damn scene. Don’t make me want to talk about it. Just…
I caved. I went back and watched it. Didn’t want to, but iknowwhythesongbirdsings made me do it.
I’m trying my hardest not to watch this damn video over but my feels are getting to me.
….I didn’t even watch the scene again. It’s just indelibly imprinted on my brain and in my heart. This was easily the most complicated scene I’ve ever seen on network television between two individuals because of the extremely powerful, yet highly nuanced emotions at play here. The sex is as raw and as primal and hunger-driven as any sex scene can be between two fully clothed people…and yet, if all you take away from it is the sex, then you understand absolutely nothing about the dynamic in this very complex relationship or the extraordinary ability of these two actors to make themselves vulnerable enough to convey such an explosive emotional and physical minefield to the audience. It’s so well-acted that it’s possible to miss everything that’s there. This scene also left me knowing that Tony Goldwyn has an extraordinary talent for conveying extremely complicated and nuanced emotions, and he has the ability to transition through several emotional states very quickly with such ease that it’s stunning.
Okay, I will bite. I’m about to go somewhere but please keep in mind that you made me do this.
This scene is forever my favorite sex scene between them because it was way more than just sex. It was pain, love, anger, fear, hunger, yearning, betrayal, want, & need. It was emotion driven. It was raw & passionate. It was what the episode title named it to be…it was a “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot”.
Tango: (1) a Latin-American dance in which couples make long pauses in difficult positions. (2) interaction marked by a lack of straightforwardness.
Foxtrot: a formal dance that includes slow walking steps and quick running steps.
This was a somewhat liquor induced dance of two lovers. They both had a glass of something before this moment happened(Whiskey). This was already an emotional moment for both of them because of the way that they left one another—him finding out about Defiance & feeling betrayed; her leaving Edison ready to take a chance & wait for Fitz, only to be left hanging. Emotions were running high with 10 months of unsaid words & hurt feelings. On top of those emotions come the ones that are probably telling them that they should hate each other for the betrayal & the hurt that they both caused one another but the love & need for each other outweighs all other emotions in this moment.
As you said, I don’t think Fitz had a plan. He just needed one minute with his Livvie. Even if not the traditional minute that we are use to seeing, he just needed a minute alone with her because she is the air that he breathes. She is his light at the end of the tunnel. There was no plan. He saw her leave & in his mind he had nothing to lose. It was as you said, ”she left and all the oxygen left the room immediately. In order to breathe again, he had to get to the oxygen source, which was Olivia." Fitz was a dying man with a need that outweighed any thought or feeling. He was a drowning man in need of his source of oxygen.
The chase in the hallway was their Foxtrot(Foxtrot: a formal dance that includes slow walking steps and quick running steps). Olivia started off just walking. She was leaving, trying to get away from the one person who can get all into her mind, body, & spirit & intertwine parts of her that she can normal keep separate. She was running from him to protect herself. The last time she was open & took a chance with him, he left her & she was hurt, alone, & broken. She didn’t want to feel that anymore. She wanted to be free.
The thing that I love about the subtext of this chase is that it is the perfect set up for the Tango dance. Fitz is trying to get to Olivia because she is his source of oxygen & Olivia is trying to get away from Fitz because in this moment, with them being on the outs, he is the thing that suffocates her.
From the moment that Fitz grabs Olivia, the Tango has begun. In that closet the Tango took place. Everything about their passionate, emotion driven sex was a Tango by the second definition(Tango: interaction marked by a lack of straightforwardness). Both of these two were in a place where need outweighed thought. They hadn’t talked to each other, no issues were resolved but in that moment, in that confined space, they needed each other. Fitz need to breathe. He needed his world to spin right again. He needed his Livvie. Olivia needed to know that the man that she had gave up what would have been a normal, easy life with Edison was still there. She needed to know that despite his words & the fact that he was hurt that he still loved her. She needed Fitz.
They did the almost butt naked tango & threw every bit of themselves into this sex. It was not just limbs reaching for each other out of the need to scratch a sexual itch. It was souls intertwining after being separated for so long. It was souls trying to connect. Trying to find that deep connection that one can only find by being inside someone or being completely filled by someone.
Have you ever heard the song Crown Royal by Jill Scott? That is what they were doing in that damn closet.
“Your hands on my hips pull me right back to you. I catch that thrust give it right back to you. You’re in so deep I’m breathing for you."—Crown Royal by Jill Scott
Me right now…
Hold on one second…
You see, this is why I cannot fuck with this scene. I went somewhere else that I had no intention of going & I lost all track of time & everything else. I was supposed to write 2 maybe 3 paragraphs tops but there are gifs & definitions above. My ass went there like old episodes of Degrassi. Man, I blame you for this shit iknowwhythesongbirdsings. I don’t even know if I finished my thought but after looking at the actual ClosetGate gifs, I got nothing else. I can’t say shit.
